I have an Altec 9440A 800 Watt amp, which I recently fried. I would like very much to repair the amp, but haven't got a clue where to take it, and I do not have a manual. Does anyone out there have the specs and/or a manual for this amp? Does anyone out there know of someone who is capable and willing to repair this amp?

It stopped making sound, then the fuse went. I put a new fuse in and it will not even power up. I think it is good and fried. Thanks for directing me to the manual and specs. I think I can get it fixed. One of the VU meters did not work even before the amp got toasted. Does anyone have a spare VU for Parts? If not, can a VU Be rebuilt? I really want to preserve this great amp.

I've got a spare meter, and a little practice going through these beasts, will be glad to help any way I can. By your description, it might not be too hard to find the problem, "completely dead" is often easier to fix than performance issues, especially intermittent ones. The DPST rotary power switch is a common item to fail, but shouldn't take a fuse out. Most likely, a PS component died, but as long as it wasn't the xfmr, should be fairly easy to fix. There's even a good chance you can find the culprit visually, and if you're lucky, it didn't take anything with it but the fuse. If visual inspection yeilds no clues, I'd start with the xfmr, if it's bad, you've got a parts amp. If you're handy with a meter, and know how to play in there without frying yourself, I'll try to help. Otherwise, Ira's de man. I think he still does a diagnosis/estimate for around $50.
